The foundation of Kids Living Free rests on Jesus’ words found in John 8:36, “Therefore if the Son makes you free; you shall free indeed.” Empowering Kids for Life is the core of the Kids Living Free program. This exciting new curriculum guides children in discovering the path to Christian character and gives them the tools they need to build their own “tower of power” to avoid life-controlling problems and live in the freedom of Christ. The idea for Kid’s Living Free was birthed in November 2007 when AG missionary Tom Lofton of Child in the Midst/Teen Challenge Children was asked to help develop a drug prevention program for Teen Challenge of Western Cape in South Africa, directed by Jacobus Nomdoe. KidsQuest had already established an excellent school assembly program that included a world-class comic designed by Steve Benintendi. Tom suggested that a solid follow-up program was necessary to complete the existing drug prevention outreach. Lofton met with Dr. Jimmy Lee, founder and president of Turning Point Ministries/Living Free, to explore the possibility of adapting Living Free’s Insight Group: Discover the Path to Christian Character for children. Through this small group study, written by Dr. Lee, God has transformed the lives of thousands of people around the world. Without hesitation, Dr. Jimmy Lee and Turning Point/Living Free agreed to the concept and set plans in motion for pastoral counselor and author Jean Brunson to do the adaptation. The need for such material was present. The model was available. The team to adapt, edit, illustrate, and lay out the curriculum was intact. Yet funding of the project was missing. We thank God that Boys and Girls Missions Challenge (BGMC) of the Assemblies of God exists for such projects. Gay Wall, director of children’s ministries for the AG Georgia District, pledged to raise the money needed to make the dream of Kids Living Free a reality. Within less than one year, the children of Georgia’s Assemblies of God churches raised the needed $25,000. The result: Empowering Kids for Life was launched in October 2008. This excellent curriculum lays a foundation for developing godly character in children and empowers them to live lives free of destructive addictions to drugs and alcohol, cutting, pornography, co-dependency and unhealthy relationships. An idea that began with a request in South Africa has grown into a ministry that is blossoming around the world. Empowering Kids for Life is expected to be introduced in more than 100 countries this year. Plans are underway for training conferences in the United States and in South Africa.
